Katyushas might have gained fame during the World War II, but this does not mean that their popularity ended with the end of the war. If in doubt about this, you would simply need to talk with the Israelis living in the northern region of the country. Hezbollah, a fundamental Israel group operating from Southern Lebanon, has used the Katyushas to launch rockets into the northern parts of Israel for the longest time.
Second Lebanon War took place in 2006 and one of its most enduring memories is the disruption it made on Israel home front through the Katyushas. The threat in Israel regarding the Katyushas is the ease with which the multiple rocket launchers can be taken apart and assembled. What this means is that nobody would never struggle to smuggle such weapons into Israel and use it to cause untold suffering among the citizenry.
The constant fear in Israel regarding its national security has to do with the fact that taking Katyusha apart before reassembling it deep within the country is a massive possibility. The existing fear is worsened by the fact that the demilitarized state of Palestine offers Israel enemies the perfect platform from whence to launch missiles into the Jewish state and cause untold mayhem among the citizenry.
The reality of the threat in Israel has to do with the fact that the majority of Jewish cities in Israel are within the range of Katyushas especially when launched from Lebanon. Launching Katyusha anywhere from Gaza and West Bank would similarly cause plenty of suffering to residents of majority of the Israel cities. The metropolitan area of Tel Aviv, which is the industrial base of the Jewish state, is just but one of the places that are at great risk from Katyusha rocket launches.
It is worth mentioning that the metropolitan area of Tel Aviv is home to close to 70 percent of the country’s Jewish populace. Tel Aviv is also home to about 80 percent of the country’s entire industrial base. Thus far, Israel has managed to keep the threat under wraps predominantly because of the military control that it has in West Bank as well as Gaza. If Israel is to lose its military control, the threat to the security and safety of its people would increase manifold.
The main reason for the existence of fear regarding the threat in Israel is that if this Jewish nation was to cede military control over Gaza and the entire West Bank regions, smuggling Katyushas into the country would be the norm. The smuggling of Katyushas would similarly be impossible to stop. The result is that such a scenario could see the increase in attacks within Israel, thus leading to massive panics and fear among the citizenry.
Therefore, it is clear that Katyushas have the potential of bringing Israel to a stop. The existence of Israel as a country is impossible to foresee in a situation where launching Katyushas from West Bank, Lebanon or Gaza becomes the norm. Israel has a tough job ensuring that the threat remains just that rather than transforming into something much worse.
